Prior to the existence of the Police Memorial Foundation, two golf tournaments were held to raise funds for other purposes. When the Foundation became a reality, the decision was made to conduct future tournaments to raise money for the families of officers killed in the line of duty. The "Los Angeles Police-Celebrity Golf Tournament" was born.

For many years, the Tournament has been the sole fund raising event for the Police Memorial Foundation. It has won the support of the entertainment community with hundreds of celebrities participating since its inception in 1970. Celebrity hosts over the years have included Dean Martin, Jack Lemmon, Sammy Davis, Jr., Robert Stack, Frank Sinatra, Chad Everett, Harvey Korman, McLean Stevenson, George Peppard, Craig T. Nelson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Jack Nicholson, Joe Pesci, James Woods, and Dennis Franz.

Celebrity golfers have included John Candy, Stacy Keach, Lee Meriwether, Danny Thomas, Chuck Norris, Jason Alexander, James Garner, Dinah Shore, David Hasselhoff, Fred MacMurray, Burt Reynolds, Leslie Nielson, Henry Fonda, Henry Winkler, Dennis Franz, Hal Linden, Lawrence Welk and Bob Hope.

The Golf Tournament is held annually on the third Saturday in May at Rancho Park Golf Course in West Los Angeles, one of the finest public golf courses in the nation.

More than just a golf tournament, this family event features added attractions including LAPD displays such as a police helicopter, patrol cars and motorcycles. Several LAPD specialty units will also have displays including the K-9, SWAT, Bomb Squad, and Mounted Units.

The tournament typically draws 8,000 to 10,000 spectators, fans, and autograph seekers.
